807 Boscobel, in Historic Edgefield, Nashville, TN

Many of my clients moving to Nashville from out of town want to buy in the Historic Edgefield area and after selling several houses in the area, I would like to share the excitement of the area.   Edgefield is an area very rich in history and where the residents take great pride in their neighborhood.  Many investors have been going in and buying up old, worn out houses, and turning them into wonderful homes.

Edgefield was Tennessee’s first historic district, and became an independent city in 1869.  It is where many of Nashville’s wealthiest people lived back then, due to the proximity to downtown Nashville.  Most of Nashville’s doctors, lawyers and business men lived in Edgefield, along with some outlaws like Jesse and Frank James.  Some say that Jesse James actually taught Sunday school at Tulip Street Methodist Church, which is still standing today.

Unfortunately, this area has been hit by several disasters-

In 1916, a fire that started in a mill, burned over 600 homes and left more then 3,000 people homeless.  While some left the area, others stayed and rebuilt. This was the time of bungalows and cottages and due to smaller lot sizes this worked out great and gave Edgefield its uniqueness.

In 1933, a tornado hit Edgefield and destroyed many of the homes and businesses.  After the storm, wealthier residents decided to move to the suburbs such as Green Hills and Belle Meade.  This left the poorer residents in the Edgefield area and during WWII, many of the homes were turned into boarding houses.  Edgefield became an area that was less desirable, and by the 1960’s few people wanted to live there.

In 1998, the area was again hit by a tornado, which actually took the same path as the one in 1933.  Many homes were damaged or destroyed.  Following the tornado, people became involved in helping the existing residents clean up and focused attention on the neighborhood, with it's rich history.
